As the title says, random association means that connecting two words that has no direct connection to it, in my words a technique to get a creative idea. This technique can create fresh ideas fast and useful.

This technique stats by randomly create an image or a word from the problem, In this case cats and horror, and connect the 2 chosen objects or words and come out with other random words as long as using the aspect of words as a metaphor. Brain process it and connect it to the problem that you want to solve to get the best solution.

Random Association is a good way to generate ideas. This can be said as the application of Metaphor and anology. By randomly create a word and we can connect the words to make it into things that actually make sense and might as well solve the problem or create more new ideas.

Juxtaposition 2

Today is a continuation of last week's Juxtaposition, but with something different. We are given task to choose 3 numbers from 1 to 99, then the lecturer give us the words for each numbers and we have to join the two words from the number we choose. For example, for me it's 28, 31, 88. so my words will be, Lighting Wood, Ice Water, and Oil Wood.

This is a very interesting way of thinking differently and creating something new out of the new idea found from this exercise and how to apply juxtaposition in your design.

Juxtaposition, I can't even pronounce it.

But from what I know, The easiest way to explain it is Contrast.

By understanding this is very useful to the new age creative personal like us, we will be able to create better work. It's an arrangement of two opposing ideas, characters, objects and so forth to make the story more interesting. because of the juxtaposition, it grabs audiences attention.

Mortar and Pestle

Some times it's hard to think creatively when logic is in the way. For this exercise, Mortar and Pastel, we are require to think creatively of other ways of using this tool that had already been in my life for quite some time. Stereotype. this is a typical example of stereotype. when we think of mortar ans pastel we will think of the function of it, the product it make and where it is being use. The sound and the smell of it had been in our mind for quite some time. what can we use it for other then what we know?

This exercise started to crack my head then the lecturer told us to put our self in the shoe of a youngster in the future, where the use of the mortar and pastel has stopped long time ago. It has prove not much help at first but in the end I had came out with some solution to it.

From this exercise, I had experienced the way to left out logic and find a way to solve the problem by going around it. I had also experienced if i can't solve the problem, just keep on working harder and think different ways. as long as i don't give up, the problem will be solve, as mention in the early lessons.

Creative thinking, What it that?

There are two ways of thinking creatively to solve problems, one is Convergent Thinking the other one is the opposite of it, Divergent Thinking. Convergent is a way to think which takes all the information and knowledge and turn it into an answers or a solution to a problem. Opposite of it, divergent thinking normally involves brainstorming and looking for alternatives way to solve problems.

People may only think Convergent-ly, others may think Divergent-ly, but face it or not, both ways are need in our life to solve different problems.

Mindmap, what is is?

Mindmap is a very useful way to both memories things and also find solution to problems. by making a mindmap, you may see things like never before. A mindmap is able to help people memories paragraph and paragraph of words. How on earth do it do that? This is because, human's mind memories better when colors and pictures are involve, since mindmap is mostly about colors and picture, it help people to remember things better.

Stereotype?

Stereotype shape the public thinking. Like when some one says apple, what will come to your mind? Red? Green? Most people will think of the type of apple that they are frequently sees or told. But when you let a 4 y.o. child color a picture of apples, you will notice that all kinds of colors will come out, blue, purple, chocolate. Why? because as we grown up, others has always remind us that apple is red, apple is green, if you color apple as blue it's wrong. keep on repeating the process until the information of apple is red kept deep down in our mind. This is when stereo type occur. But this is something that could be a good thing as it could be something bad too. We'll loose some of our creativity because of the logic, but will keep us safe from eating the blue apple.

Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs, is an American business magnate and inventor. He is well-known for being the co-founder and chief executive officer of Apple. Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. Jobs founded another computer company, NeXT Computer after leaving Apple. Jobs is also known as the one man who could have upstaged Bill Gates. But Jobs was as excited about innovation as Bill Gates was interested in making money.

Steve Jobs was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Joanne Simpson and an Egyptian Arab father. Paul and Clara Jobs of Mountain View, Santa Clara County, Californiathen adopted him. The writer Mona Simpson is Jobs’ biological sister. In 1972, Jobs graduated from Homestead High School in Cupertino, California and enrolled in Reed College in Portland, Oregon. One semester later he had dropped out. But instead of going back home he hung around college and took up the study of philosophy and foreign cultures.

Steve Jobs had a deep-seated interest in technology so he took up a job at Atari Inc. which was a leading manufacturer of video games. He struck a friendship with fellow designer Steve Wozniak and attended meetings of the “Homebrew Computer Club” with him. Wozniak and Jobs developed a system with a toy whistle available in the Cap’n Crunch cereal box to make it possible to make free long distance telephone calls. They called off the amateur venture after someone told them of the possible legal consequences.

After saving up some money Steve Jobs took off for India in the search of enlightenment with his friend Dan Kottke. Once he returned he convinced Wozniak to quit his job at Hewlett Packard (HP) and join him in his venture that concerned personal computers. They sold items like a scientific calculator to raise the seed capital.

In 1976, Jobs and Wozniak founded Apple Computer Co. in the Jobs family garage. The first personal computer was sold for $666.66. By 1980, Apple had already released three improved versions of the personal computer. It had a wildly successful IPO, which made both founders millionaires many times over. Steve Jobs had managed to rope in John Scully of Pepsi to head the marketing function in Apple.

A tiff with the Apple board and John Scully led to the resignation of Steve Jobs. As soon as he resigned he immersed himself in his brand new venture. Steve Jobs decided that he wanted to change the hardware industry. The company was called NeXT Step and the new machine was called NeXT Computer. He ploughed in more than U.S. $250 million into the company. The machine was a commercial washout but it did help in object-oriented programming, PostScript, and magneto-optical devices. Tim Berners-Lee developed the original World Wide Web system at CERN on a NeXT machine. Bitterly disappointed with NeXT Step, Jobs accepted the offer that Apple made him.

Steve Jobs also started Pixar Inc., which has gone on to produce animated movies such as Toy Story (1995); A Bug’s Life (1998); Toy Story 2 (1999); Monsters, Inc. (2001); Finding Nemo (2003); and The Incredibles (2004). This venture has made him one of the most sought after men in Hollywood.

Post Pixar, Steve Jobs wanted another round of revolutionizing to do. This time it was the music industry. He introduced the iPod in 2003. Later he came up withiTunes, which was a digital jukebox. A million and a half iPods later, the music industry still does not know whether this invention will save it or destroy it. Applehas a great advertising track record and its ‘Rip, Mix, Burn’ campaign was another feather in its cap. Now the industry uses a Mac to make the music and an iPod to store it.

Steve Jobs had created a Techno storm that changes the world in recent years. His failure in the early days which due to his ill-tempered thinking make him suffer a lot yet he overcome himself and making his idea sale. He’s successful because he think out of the box and create products that are valued by many and also have more interaction to others. This has make Apple, Macintosh, and Pixar change the life of everyone in the world.

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention.

What is Creativity, novelty, innovation and invention.

Howard Gardner, psychologist at Harvard University said, being creative means doing something which is first of all unusual. I agree with his argument, new invention always started out unusual, this is because people need to get use to new things before they can take forgathered. But people may soon forget the person who invented or maybe not even know who invented the things they use, doesn't mens that we as creative personal should stop doing good for the public, after all, creativity is the process of generating new things which has it value,mean it is useful for people. A creation may not be as original as other said, but it should always has it own values.

The printing press example given in class which was invented by the Johannes Gutenberg has demonstrated that creation should always based on the need of the people,it has created a huge impact to the society people accepted and supported his idea and these supports make the creation more valuable.The creation always based on the need of the people. In other words, Innovation means, to bring in new ideas or make changes.

What about Novelty?
It can be explain in two forms:-

Subjective novelty: A perception of something as being new by a person or a group of persons.
Objective novelty: something new for all and its development for ages.

What is creativity?

The first question that the lecturer ask right before he started anything~

Good one. What is creativity? we always put is together with us when explaining what we study to our friends and family. we will always explains that we are in the creative field, we deal with creativity, But what is creativity really about?

"Creativity is the ability to generate innovative ideas and manifest them from thought into reality. The process involves original thinking and then producing.

The process of creation was historically reserved for deities creating "from nothing" in Creationism and other creation myths. Over time, the term creativity came to include humaninnovation, especially in art and science and led to the emergence of the creative class." - Wikipedia.

"Who has more creativity?" the question ask by lecturer.

Artist? Scientist? Teachers?

The answer is everyone. Everyone have it in our head, it's only whether we put it to use or put it to rest. It's not something that only a hand full of people born with but every single living organism born with. Yes, to me every single living organism born with creativity, why? if i tell you elephant shower with their trunks, what would you say? it's his way of life? it's his instinct? it's born to know how to do it? but have anyone look at it in a different way? did the very first elephant knows how to do it? how did he find out to use it's trunk to suck water and spray water on it's body? it can't control on how it will look like when it came to this world..

But what can do is just like what we should do. try and error, put effort in to anything we do, and we will be able to do it. It maybe difficult from time to time but like what Thomas Edison said, 1% of inspiration and 99% of perspiration we will be able to succeed.

During the first day of class, we learned that being a designer is not mealy creating something beautiful, but it should be something useful to the public. Being a good designer, we will need to solve problems in a creative way. Not only to create something for the purpose of finishing a job or a project, as the piece of work are done by us, we should be fully responsible to it. The color used in this website (www.baskinrobbins.com) give us a very good feeling which brings out the tastiness of the product which is good use of its CI color. The font use in this website also have a simple and yet suite it’s logotype font.

The color use in this website (www.tlj.co.kr) are the same color as its logo and some how give everything a very natural feeling which give the website a very tasty and some how brings out an elegant feeling. The type font also give me a very friendly feeling.

This web page (http://2080.aekyung.co.kr/2080_0711/index.jsp) is all about freshness and it uses its brand name “2080” as part of its design. The overall color in this website is in white and the only color in it also brings out the freshness feeling.

This site (http://www.valyard.ru/thesite.html) uses a very vibrant color and it gives me a very neon light style and I seldom see webpage with this type of color approach.

This website (http://www.prospectdenim.com/) is a web site to promote its jeans which they use a farm approach where there’s a barn and a very natural fresh color. The type font use here also have a vintage feeling which suite the overall feeling and suite the time and age of the scene.

From what I research on, the 3 main competitor of Baskin Robbins (BR) is Lecka- Lecka (http://www.leckalecka.com.my/), Haagen-Dazs (http://www.haagen-dazs.com/), and New Zealand Natural (http://www.newzealandnatural.com/). Each competitor got its own strength

Lecka-Lecka

First competitor that I’m going to talk about will be Lecka-Lecka (M) Sdn.Bhd. .
Lecka-Lecka’s ice-cream (a.k.a. Gelato) has the closes flavor and product as same as Baskin Robbins. Both of the companies offered low fat gelato and yoghurt base gelato.
But Lecka-Lecka has the strength of creating their gelato daily instate of its competitor’s gelato which have an 18 months shelf life.

Said in their website:
“Our gelato is made daily. When compared to other ice-cream manufacturers’ products which are imported and have a shelf life of 18 months, the choice suddenly becomes very clear.”
Their website it’s also has a very clear and delicious feeling. Their website chooses to use their identity colour which is red as their main colour. In their website they insert a lot of delicious looking product of theirs and also a lot of fresh ingredients making the website look very fresh.

New Zealand Natural

New Zealand Natural also offered ice cream which base on fresh fruits. But they promote their ice cream as ‘premium ice cream’. New Zealand Natural also has a verity of product such as refreshing beverages, Smoothies, Shakes, Juices and Chillo.
They also offered a 946ml take home pack which is similar to BR’s Handpacked.

Haagen-Dazs

Haagen-Dazs (HDz) is also one of BR’s competitors since it’s also a company which sells ice-cream. Even though HDz have some similar product to BR, but its base on a different concept and ranges of ice cream. HDz’s ice cream. HDz are more concern on the quality of its ice cream as said in their wed site:
“Häagen-Dazs started out with only three flavours: vanilla, chocolate and coffee. But Mr. Mattus' passion for quality soon took him to the four corners of the globe. This is a web side that combine a film and computer graphic. This is a website that let you create your own dishes and send it to the competition. This competition is held by Ajinomoto, a company that well know to the world of its seasoning.
What attracts me from this website is its way to present it. We seldom saw recipe competition through the net, but here it is, the 1st (To me lah~) recipe competition on the net that present like this.When you click on the ingredient from the selection, the real thing appears on the screen and will be put into the ‘kuali’ and cook it in the fire. And the main focus user will focus will defiantly be the fire and the ‘kuali’.

Darwingart is a web design company that create much well known company’s website. The first time I visit this website it only gives me an impression, Ahhhh…. . May be it’s the colour, maybe it’s the music. Everything seems just nice together. It was a simple yet elegant, cool yet relaxing feeling. I LIKE IT!! This is what I can say to this website.
The colour and the combination of the music makes the whole website felt very relaxing and makes viewer like to stay in this site and view the entire sub site.
Beside that, the navigation button are also very user friendly. Not only had they had the basic navigation button on the bottom of the page, but also that secondary button such as the sound, background colour and news letter button appears on the left and right of the screen. This makes the whole page seems neat and clear and also user friendly.

This is a Toshiba webpage from Japan. The designer tries to use a new way to navigate through out the web site, which user can control the animation itself. User goes to different pages by moving the mouse to different direction and also by using the scroll on the mouse to move to other pages too.

It is a very unusual way to navigate and I think the designer done a great job on this website.
But sadly, this type of navigation may cause a lot of headache too many people.I personally like the design but not the way it navigates. It’s very confusing and the background music sound effect makes it worse. The only things I do on this web site were play with the effect for a few minutes and close the window without viewing on any of the information. This is due to the way it navigate that make me fed up with

This website belongs to the Michelin tyres company. In this website they promoted their product by bringing user into the Michelin man (aka Bibendum) world. The designer created this world of Bibendum that produce quality tyres and high tech machineries that only appears in this virtual world.
The graphic and animation looks wonderful and it also had a lot of interesting transaction to bring us from place to place.
The overall webpage is like a tour of the factory and it will let us choose where to go. It’s a very enjoyable tour for me.
The information they put in it is very educational and makes us know the technology behind the tyre.
The only down site is that it took too much time loading and not everyone will have high internet speed to view it smoothly.

This is the official website of the International Street and Open-air Theatre Festival FETA.

It is a very interesting website that fully used the arrow key on the key board to navigate

through out the whole website. Whenever you use your mouse to click on any buttons, another

page will slide out and tell you that it’s an arrow navigating website and also tell you that which

arrow will bring you to which sub page and how to navigate it.

It’s kind of cool cause there isn’t a lot of webpage that give us the chance to navigate by using the keyboard only, and it’s kind of unique in it’s own way. The web site don’t have much

information in it but the way they present it makes it seems good enough to being present.

This web page used a horizontal style whereby the pages are being arranged in to a very long

horizontal view. Whenever we want to go into a sub page, we’ll just need to press down on the

arrow key. This will make the user recognised and it will be very easy to navigate.
